Project of the Department of Psychology
Women’s Christian College

VIKAAS, (the Sanskrit equivalent for “Overall Development”) is the student counseling centre of Women’s Christian College. This unit was started in 1985 as a project of the Department of Psychology, WCC, to give the students an opportunity to talk to student counselors on various issues relating to their personal and scholastic lives. This project was initially funded by the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia (UBCHEA) and later supported by the Management of the College Association.

Vikaas is now situated in the Science Block. The student counselor is available to students between 8.30 am to 3.00 pm on all working days. The center caters to the needs of both the day and evening college students. Mrs. Zarina Ahmed, who graduated with a Master’s Degree in Psychology from WCC, is the student counselor since 2000.

Psychological counseling is offered to students related to issues on concentration, time management, study habits, shyness, insecurity, self esteem, exam fear, communication skills, interpersonal relationships, etc. Group counseling programs are held on a regular basis for students on Personality development. Some of the programs held include Enhancing Communication Skills, Personal Growth And Awareness, Anger Management, Assertiveness Training, Leadership Training and so on. Psychological assessments of personality, intelligence, vocational interest and aptitude are available at Vikaas. The center is equipped with 12 such assessment materials and also 77 books on self-help. Students can borrow these books from Vikaas.
