VIKAAS, (the Sanskrit equivalent for “Overall
Development”) is the student counseling centre of Women’s
Christian College. This unit was started in 1985 as a project
of the Department of Psychology, WCC, to give the students an
opportunity to talk to student counselors on various issues
relating to their personal and scholastic lives. This project
was initially funded by the United Board for Christian Higher
Education in Asia (UBCHEA) and later supported by the Management
of the College Association.
Vikaas is now situated in the Science Block.
The student counselor is available to students between 8.30
am to 3.00 pm on all working days. The center caters to the
needs of both the day and evening college students. Mrs. Zarina
Ahmed, who graduated with a Master’s Degree in Psychology
from WCC, is the student counselor since 2000.
Psychological counseling is offered to students
related to issues on concentration, time management, study habits,
shyness, insecurity, self esteem, exam fear, communication skills,
interpersonal relationships, etc. Group counseling programs
are held on a regular basis for students on Personality development.
Some of the programs held include Enhancing Communication Skills,
Personal Growth And Awareness, Anger Management, Assertiveness
Training, Leadership Training and so on. Psychological assessments
of personality, intelligence, vocational interest and aptitude
are available at Vikaas. The center is equipped with 12 such
assessment materials and also 77 books on self-help. Students
can borrow these books from Vikaas. Referral services are also
offered for students with psychiatric problems.
