| National Service Scheme has three units that
is comprised of volunteers from the Day college and Evening
college. The units are funded by the NSS of the University of
Madras. The Programme officers help organize the various projects
and events for the NSS volunteers. They encourage the students
to participate in one or more of the projects offered. |

| 600 students have enrolled for
the academic year 2006-2007. |

| Projects Undertaken : |
- Big Sisters project –
acting as big sisters to school children (Anjugam school),
volunteers for Teach India project (computer education to
government school children).
- Little sisters of the poor project
– Visit to old age home to help the senior citizens.
- Helping hands project –
Preparation of teaching aid for the Mc Dougal school and
the College nursery school and sale of products made by
the disabled.
- College library and Connemera
library project– helps in re-shelving of books.
- Special camp conducted
at different locations every year, by the volunteers to
empower women in the adopted villages, by training them
for self-employment – Tailoring / Embroidery, Mushroom
culture/ pickle making.
- AIDS awareness programme-
Technical sessions, exhibitions, visit to Shelter Home (NGO)
- Blood donation camps arranged
every semester and has the distinction of having donated
the highest units of blood among women colleges in Chennai.
- Youth Red Cross volunteers
help Out-Patients at Egmore eye hospital and children’s
hospital and at Kilpauk hospital.
- ABSTINANCE CLUB volunteers
participate in street theatre workshops, seminars and exhibitions
conducted by the APAC and the Adult and Continuing Education
Department of the Madras University.
- TANSACS project-
Tamilnadu state field officers visit regularly
and organise workshop and guest lectures.
- Traffic Regulation Project conducted
in co-ordination with the Madras University and also Fixing
of Black Spot on vehicles.
- Organize seminars on the NSS-
Theme of the year.
- Sponsor the nutritious health drink (ragi kanji)
for the inmates of St.Paul’s orphanage-Anjar Project.
- Conduct competitions to discover talented NSS volunteers.
- 27/07/06 – A Blood camp
was conducted in the college premises in collaboration with
the Lion’s Blood bank and 100 units of blood was donated
by the student volunteers.
- 5/09/06 – The Tamilnadu State Election Commissioner
,D.Chandrasekaran I.A.S. spoke on “Voters
Awareness”. The Madras University
N.S.S. Co-ordinator was the special invitee.
- 2/10/06- 2 Students attended the Street Theatre Workshop
conducted at ICSA on Aid’s Awareness.
- November 11- 15th-The Prtogramme Officer and 3 students
participated in an Inter-State study
and training camp at Bhubaneswar, Orissa as Tamilnadu delegates
and won laurels for the state.
- November 18 & 19th volunteers
participated in an International Workshop on Aids
conducted by an N.G.O. at G.R.T. in collaboration
with the Madras University.
- November 22-23rd Tamilnadu Corporation
for Development of Women conducted sales in
the college premises of S.H.G. products.

| Eligibility : |
| Any undergraduate student is
eligible to enroll in any of these projects. It is compulsory
in the II year and voluntary in the I & III year. |

| Highlights : |
| The highlights of this activity
is that the program being a government sponsored one, due recognition
is given by the government as well as by the University of Madras
that helps co-ordinate all activities. Also the students receive
certificates for their participation and this is recognized
for their future academic endeavors. |

| Facilities : |
| The college auditorium and the
Assembly hall is utilized to arrange lectures and sales and
other meetings. |

| Activities : |
| The students work in their project
two to three days a week and a Co-ordinator and Assistant Co-ordinator
is appointed to look into the details of attendance and requirements
of the students for every project and this in turn is checked
into by the Programme Officer. |

| Prizes : |
| The best volunteer from any one
of the Extension activity is chosen for the Vimala
Pai Prize. In the III year the best N.S.S. volunteer
is elected for the Senate post in the college, as the Chairperson
of N.S.S. Besides this there is the I & II year representative
for N.S.S. and these students help regulate activities. |

| Future plans : |
| The future plan of this extension
activity is to involve its Programme officer and students in
an Inter-National training camp and study meet that would help
to give a good exposure to the staff and the students of our
institution and also participate and conduct many more activities. |
