M.Sc. Physics was started in the year 1999 in order to motivate women to pursue higher education in the field of Science. It was first started only with 13 students, but the present strength of the students has been raised to 26. Originally the course was under the University pattern and our students acquired various university ranks in 1999,2003 and 2004 examinations. Every year students are made to attend the STIP training programme (State level) conducted by the University of Madras. The students regularly present papers at seminars and conferences. A state level workshop ‘Recent trends in Astrophysics’ (2000) and National level ‘Integrated Science National Meet’(2002) was conducted by the department.

Faculty :
Ms. S.Lakshmi Devi, M.Sc. - Staff -in-charge
Ms. D. Hannah Catherine Punitha, M.Sc., M.Phil. - Lecturer
Ms. SharmiKumar, M.Sc., M.Phil. - Lecturer
Ms. Bright, M.Sc., M.Phil. - Lecturer
Dr. Renuga Devi T.S, M.Sc., Ph.D. - Lecturer

Student strength:
26 each in I and II M.Sc.

Programmes Offered:
M.Sc. Physics.

Eligibility to Register:
B.Sc. Physics with Mathematics Ancillary(Allied)
B.Sc. Applied Sciences
with Mathematics Ancillary(Allied)
Students with B.E.S. are not eligible

Highlights of the Programmes:

Under the autonomous pattern the syllabi has been framed such that the first three semesters of the course gives a very strong foundation in most of the masters level physics such as Mathematical Physics, Classical Mechanics, Electromagnetic theory, Quantum Mechanics, Condensed matter physics, Nuclear Physics and Electronics. Current subjects of interest like Nanotechnology, Microcontroller and C programming are taught in the last semester.

Project: The students have to take up a project during the final year of the course. The project work is taken up in various premier institutions and research laboratories like IGCAR – Kalpakkam, Anna University, Madras University, CLRI adyar, Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai, Regional Meteorlogical centre, Birla Planetarium, Pachaiyappa’s college., etc.

The projects are done in  various fields like Condensed matter Physics, Material Science, Microprocessor, Spectroscopy, Theoretical Physics, AstroPhysics, BioPhysics, Crystallography, Ultrasonics, Dielectric studies, cyclone studies etc.

Facilities:
  • The department has well equipped electronics , microprocessor, computer and general experiments laboratory.
  • The labs have several sophisticated equipment like GM counter, Ultrasonic interferometer, Constant deviation spectrograph, Quincke’s and Guoy’s apparatus etc.

Activities:
  1. Every year 2 or 3 students attend the Summer training programme in Physics (STIP) conducted by the University of Madras. For this programme around 20 students are selected from all colleges/universities in the state.
  2. Students regularly present their project work as papers/posters at the state level Technical seminar conducted by the Indian Spectrophysics Association. Atleast one of the first three prizes in the oral and poster presentations have been bagged by our students consecutively for the past four years.

Associations/Magazines:
The proceedings of the Integrated  Science National Meet for College students’ on December 2002 included around 50 articles written by the M.Sc. students.

Future Plans :
  • The department is working at present to start M.Phil. course in Physics. In future years the aim is to upgrade it to a research department.
  • To conduct National and International conferences/workshops in current research areas and topics of emerging trends.
  • To establish collaborative research work with premier research institutes and universities.
  • To start short term certificate/diploma courses.
  • Start coaching classes for NET/SLET/CSIR and other competitive examinations.

Other details:
Seminars/conferences conducted:
  • A two day state level workshop on ‘Recent trends in Astrophysics’ was conducted by the department. Seminars were given by eminent persons in the field. A one day trip to Kavaloor was arranged.
  • The Integrated Science National meet was organized in collaboration with Science city. It was the first integrated science meet organized for college students at the national level. This meet had brought more than 40 institutions and 350 students together to work towards interdisciplinary approach.138 papers and projects were received and categorized as physical Science, Biological Science, Chemical Science and Technology. 351 students from 11 states including Tamil Nadu had registered and 111 students had been selected for the final presentation.
Student activities:
  • The Astronautical society of India conducted an International Astronautical conference in Spain from October 2nd to 6th 2006. As part of the selection procedure students had to present a technical paper on any one of the 6 topics specified by the society and send it to ISRO, Bangalore.

Ms.Meghana Ramani of II M.Sc. Physics submitted a paper on’Role of Space sciences in managing earth’s resources’. She was one of the 20 shortlisted candidates  at the national level selected to present a  seminar and attend a personal interview on August 6th 2006 at the ISRO headquarters, Bangalore. She got the overall sixth place in the semi-finals round among the 20 students from the National level.
