The department was established in 1999 with one UG programme. In 2001, a 5-year integrated Master’s programme in Computer Science and Technology and a Master’s programme in Information Technology were started. Considering the fact that India is thrusting itself as the leader into the information technology era, the department aims to impart high quality education and prepare the young women to challenge the ever-demanding IT field. The curriculums of the courses are designed to give strong foundation in all technical aspects of computers and its applications and also to develop the communication and soft skills of the students. Apart from making them good IT professionals, the department takes care to instill strong moral values into each individual to make them good citizens of our nation to serve the industry and society constructively.
 
The self-financing section of the college was granted autonomous status in the year 2005. Since then the department has made a conscious effort to strengthen and expand its activities.
 
Objectives:
  1. To translate the mission statement of WCC.
  2. To ignite the inner potential of the students and cultivate creativity and initiative among the students through academic and co-curricular activities.
  3. To give hands on experience in the IT industry through projects.

The Department of Computer Science (Self-financed) offers the following Programmes:

Bachelor of Computer Applications

M.Sc Computer Science and Technology (5 Years Integrated Course)

M.Sc. Information Technology

 
Eligibility :
B.C.A (Bachelor of Computer Applications)
Candidates seeking admission to B.C.A. should have passed the Higher Secondary Examination conducted by the Government of TamilNadu or an examination accepted as equivalent thereof by the Syndicate of the University of Madras.
M.Sc. Computer Science and Technology (5-year Integrated course)
Candidates seeking admission to M.Sc. 5-year integrated course should have passed the Higher Secondary Examination with Mathematics & Physics.
M.Sc. Information Technology
A Candidate who has passed any Bachelor’s degree of not less than three years duration having studied Mathematics or Statistics or Business Mathematics or Business Statistics or Mathematical Physics as main or allied subject or any other degree course from any other University accepted as equivalent thereto.
 
Highlights of the Programmes:

B.C.A (Bachelor of Computer Applications)
The BCA Program is designed for students who are interested in pursuing rewarding careers in the field of IT. The program encompasses foundational courses, core courses dealing with latest tools and techniques and elective courses, with an optimal blend of theory and practice. The BCA program provides a good grounding in basic subjects. An in-depth understanding of the basic subjects will facilitate the students when they pursue advanced programs after graduation.

This program consists of six semesters (3 year duration). The final semester has one internal project which trains the students in software development.

M.Sc. Computer Science and Technology (5-year Integrated course)
The syllabi and courseware are designed to be flexible and wide-ranging, incorporating the cutting edge as well as ensuring a firm grasp of core fundamentals. A modular course design, along with hands on experience in in-house software development and also in the industry, gives students the freedom to tailor their learning experience.

This program consists of ten semesters (5 year duration), of which the final semester is devoted to a full time industry-based project. The program offers significant industry orientation through seminars, field visits and projects. The students are also trained on personality development and communication skills. The students are motivated to do research work through the publication of term papers.

M.Sc. Information Technology
The course was started to provide a strong post-graduate education that prepares students to enter the profession with a base for continued study and growth. This program consists of four semesters (2 year duration), of which the final semester is devoted to a full time industry-based project.

The courseware includes a strong foundational base in computer fundamentals, competence in computer languages, and application in projects. The students accomplish a real-time project with the industry during the course of the final semester. The program offers significant industry orientation through seminars, field visits and projects. The students are also trained on personality development and communication skills and they are motivated to do research work through the publication of term papers.

 
Facilities:
  • Three well-furnished computer laboratories with nearly 125 computers in Local Area Network.
  • Digital Electronics Laboratory and Microprocessor Development Systems.
  • A Seminar Hall with excellent seating arrangement and LCD projector facilities that is put to optimal use by the Department.
  • Broadband Internet connection that is freely available for the students in two of the labs.
 
Activities:
  • SYNCHRONIZE”, is an annual inter-collegiate techno meet organized by the staff and students of the department.
  • E- Links”, is a monthly E-News Letter which is circulated through E-mail to all the students and staff of the department. E-Links serves as a platform for the students to expose their talents and for the staff to share their knowledge through Articles, Latest Technology News, Quiz and Inspirational Stories.
  • CES – A Compulsory Extension Service comprises of extra-curricular activities by which the students do gardening in the campus, reach out to the poor and differently-abled in the community.
  • The faculty of the department also organize/attend lectures, seminars, workshops and training programs on emerging trends and technologies.
  • Seminars and Workshops are conducted for students on Personality Development and Communication skills, Career Guidance and new technologies in collaboration with the IT industry.
  • The students are deputed to companies/industries during their final semester as part of the academic requirement to do projects and gain experience.
  • The students go for an industrial visit in their final year to get an exposure to the IT industry.
  • The department also conducts Online Aptitude Tests, Group Discussions, etc to make the students self-confident.
  • The students also have internal projects, Case Studies and Term Papers to make them technically sound.
  • The department organizes Guest Lectures for the postgraduate students.
 
MAGAZINES:
The department publishes an annual magazine, “SYNCHRONIZE” at the time of the “SYNCHRONIZE” techno meet, which motivates and encourages students and staff to publish articles and share knowledge.

  • The Department of Computer Science Prize for securing the highest total marks in the major papers during the 3 years
  • The Synchronize ‘ 2004 Endowment Prize for the best student of B.C.A in recognition of her contribution to the department and the college during the three years
  • The Department of Computer Science Prize for securing the highest total marks in the major papers during the first 2 years.
M.Sc C.S.T
  • The Synchronize ‘ 2004 Endowment Prize for the best student of III M.Sc C.S.T  in recognition of her contribution to the department and the college during the three years.
M.Sc I.T
  • The department of Computer Science Prize for the best outgoing student of M.Sc I.T class
  • The Synchronize ‘ 2004 Endowment Prize for the best student of M.Sc I.T  in recognition of her contribution to the department and the college during the two years.
 
Future Plans :
  • To establish a center of excellence in collaboration with industry and  research laboratories.
  • To introduce short-term Diploma Courses in Computer Applications, Multimedia and Bio informatics.
  • To automate all the administrative activities of the Department
  • To implement a Learning Management System, which consists of online testing, online lecture notes for the students.
  • To implement computer based training.
