Description of the B.A. English Course
  • A student taking up the B.A. programme gets a sound foundation in British Literature. A number of core courses, spanning the period from 1550 to the present, introduce students to the literature and the literary forms of the age, highlighting the close link between the literature and the social background.
  • A paper in Modern American Literature introduces students to key concepts in American literature and creates an appreciation for American poetry, drama and fiction.
  • The paper in Indian Writing in English introduces students to the literary pieces written in English by Indian authors, linking their writings to the social history of their times. A wide spectrum is included from Nissim Ezekiel to Anees Jung, Kamala Das, Vikram Seth, Mahesh Dattani to Arundathi Roy and Lakshmi Kannan.
  • A Postcolonial Literature paper is included to sensitise students to the problems faced by writers trying to capture specific indigenous traditions and customs in their writing within the established literary framework of the canon in English. The course includes the works of Australian, Aboriginal, Caribbean, Canadian, South Asian, and African writers.
  • The English Language Teaching course relates English teaching practice to its theoretical basis in the linguistic sciences and in methodology and trains students to work out ways of developing the language and study skills through carefully planned and graded learning activities. Practical skill is developed through teaching peer groups and practice teaching sessions.
  • A course in Linguistics is offered as a supporting course for ELT.  It introduces students to existing techniques of analyzing any given language, especially English.
  • Feminist Perspectives – An Introduction: This course aims to make students familiar with the basic concepts and landmark texts of feminist thought.
  • The paper in Advertising and Public Relations gives them a basic understanding of the advertising process, provides some training in copy and script writing. It introduces them to the importance of public relations and teaches them the use of tools and media for PR.
  • Journalism is a core elective course that trains students in reporting, writing and editing skills. Students organize material for the campus newspaper RIVETT and publish it on a monthly basis.
  • Video Production is the other core elective course which provides theoretical and practical knowledge in visual grammar, script writing, video production and post production culminating in the production of a short video presentation.
  • Southern Indian Literature in Translation is a supporting elective course that enables students to appreciate the wealth of creative output in Southern Indian languages. It encourages students to get into the art and science of translating literary materials from one language to another.
  • Through the supporting elective course Project, students are trained in research methodology.  They do independent research and submit a dissertation.

The Department also offers Optional courses to their own and students of other departments in Creative Writing, Spoken English, Introduction to Audio-Visual Media, Journalism, Sports Journalism and Advertising.
