The Department of Computer Science was started in 1986 with a vision to prepare young women for the many opportunities in the field of computers. Exposure to all areas of Computer Science is needed to face the challenges posed by technological advancement. Hence a balanced curriculum of software and hardware was designed under the academic autonomy enjoyed by the College. Thus B.Sc. Computer Science, a six semester degree course was implemented as the first of its kind in the University of Madras in 1987. The department is proud of its vision coming true, as its 17 batches of graduates are well placed in the IT industry in companies and institutions in India and abroad. Innovative teaching techniques and modernized syllabi are the tools that make our vision come true.

B.Sc. Computer Science
 
Eligibility to Register:
Candidates seeking admission to B.Sc. Computer Science should have passed the Higher Secondary Examination with Mathematics and Physics.
 
Highlights of the Programme:
  • The students are deputed as part of the academic requirement to companies / industries during summer vacation to observe and participate in their on-going projects and gain practical experience
  • The students in the final semester are required to do a project in groups of two or three  guided by the staff members. Each group is responsible for planning, design and development of the project. It helps to improve their programming skills, communication skills and also helps them to realise the importance of team work.

  • Digital Electronics Laboratory and Microprocessor Development Systems
  • Client Computer provided with LCD Projection facility
  • 24 Hours Internet Facility
 
Activities:
  • "Competence" is an annual inter-collegiate Computer cultural organised by staff and students of the department.
  • Students are taken on visits to computer research laboratories and other places of academic interests within and outside Chennai.
  • The teachers of the department also organize / attend lectures and seminars on the areas of latest developments in Computer Science.
  • The students are deputed as part of the academic requirement to companies / industries during summer to observe and participate in their on-going projects and gain practical experience.
  • Various College projects were developed and implemented.
  • Employees of the college and students of the other major departments are introduced to the usage of computers at various levels through short-term courses.
 
Associations:
Cyber Spark – Computer Science association had its beginning in this academic year. Various eminent personalities from Computer field were invited to deliver lectures on the latest developments in Computer field. A seminar was conducted by NIIT on resume preparation and Group discussion. Various tips were given to the students about the do’s and don’ts in a group discussion. Aptitude tests were conducted regularly to improve the analytical and logical skills. The association members participated in various inter-collegiate Computer  Competitions and won many prizes. The members created awareness of new computer technologies by putting up clippings from newspapers and magazines in the department notice board.
 
Prizes and Scholarships:
  • Eleanor Mason Senior Computer Science Prize for securing the highest total marks in the Core subjects in Semesters V and VI.
  • Eleanor Mason Junior Computer Science Prize for securing the highest total marks in Core and Supporting Papers in Semesters I - IV.
  • The Computer Science Department Prize for the best outgoing student of B.Sc. Computer Science.
  • Smt. Rukmini Parthasarathy Memorial Scholarship for a needy student in the  I year B.Sc. Computer Science Class.
 
Future Plans:
  • To spread more computer awareness in the campus.
  • Conduct various short-term courses for staff and students
  • The Department plans to conduct on-line diploma courses
