| About the tree |
This tree is also known as “Umbrella Tree”. Its branches are distinctly arranged in tiers and sheds leaves in the dry season. This species is tolerant to salt. The wood is red, solid and high water resistant and has been utilized in many countries for making canoes. The bark and wood contains tannin and are used in Madagascar for dyeing and in treatment of dysentery.
This is a good shade tree and has found its place in landscaping in different parts of Chennai city. This single tree on campus was planted as 99th tree as part of the centenary tree planting initiative.
