The Department of Psychology is innovative,

| The Department began in the year 1973. The
credit of laying a strong foundation goes to the late Ms.Vishnu
Rao, former Head of the Department. A course in Psychology takes
you on a journey into the fascinating world of the mind. The
Department offers Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral programmes.
In addition to them it also offers UGC certificate, Diploma
and Advanced Diploma courses. The Department has a well equipped
laboratory. Latest Books and journals are available in the library.
Special lectures are organised in areas of Developmental Research,
Clinical, Counseling and Organizational Psychology. The
Department had visiting Fulbright Scholars offering series of
lectures. Students are encouraged to familiarize with Statistical
Package for Social Sciences so as to analyse and interpret the
research data. |

| The Bachelors Degree
course is preparatory in nature and will enable the students
to specialize further or choose a career. The course offers
papers which focuses on the History and Basics of Psychology,
the development of the individual, an overview of Statistics
and also covers diverse areas like Abnormal Psychology, Behaviour
in Organisations, Counselling Psychology, Health Psychology
and Social Psychology thus providing an exposure to the different
areas of Psychology. Laboratory work forms an integral part
of the course. The students get an opportunity to apply the
principles learnt in the above theory papers by conducting case
studies and observing the applications of theses concepts. |

| Thus the Bachelors Degree course offers Psychological
knowledge to empower people with self-understanding and interpersonal
skills to add meaning and depth to one’s life as well
as help one achieve success in life and career. Programmes aim
to provide a sound foundation for further study and for development
of a career as a Professional Psychologist in Education, Social,
Health services or in Industry. |

| At the Post
Graduate level the courses prepare
the student to launch themselves in the expanding professional
world as Psychologists, Counsellors, Consultants, Resource persons,
Faculty members, Facilitators, Trainers, and Instructors and
so on. The papers offered are application oriented and train
the students in the skills required to become experts in the
fields of Counselling or Organisational Behaviour. The students
are trained to administer various psychological tests and are
encouraged to use the skills learnt by conducting projects,
workshop and seminars. Experts in the field are invited for
lecturers, which enable the students to gain a broader perspective
on the scope of the subject. |

| In the final semester students are given
the opportunity to transfer their classroom knowledge into practical
experience through placement in schools, hospitals and organizations.
Projects and thesis form an integral part of the programme.
The course work and research papers provide comprehensive training
in psychological research methods and statistical procedures.
Research is undertaken at the PG level. The areas include Developmental,
Clinical, Social and Counselling. The students are encouraged
to present papers at conferences and publish their work in journals.

| The Masters
in Philosophy programme introduces
the students to various papers such as Psychological Theories
& Related Therapies, Research Methodology and Statistics
with an immense scope for self-study and understanding. The
students do a project on an area of interest and present a report.

| CAREERS IN PSYCHOLOGY: |
| |
| For professional careers in Psychology, students
need to go on to M.Sc. and M.Phil./PhD. They can develop a research
career in Universities or colleges or work in organization.
Careers are offered in private and Government sectors. Students
who complete a PG course in Psychology work as Psychologists,
Counselors in Educational set up or with large organizations
in various departments such as the HR dept., Training, Work
place, Career Counseling, Health Psychologist. |

| Research Activities: |
| The Department is actively involved in research.
Students and faculty are constantly attending lectures and presenting
papers. The Department is involved in publishing articles in
journals of repute. Research has been carried out in the special
areas of Mental Retardation, Learning Disability, Juvenile Delinquency,
Autism and Orthopaedically handicapped. Adults, Adolescents
and Children have formed the sample when researches on social,
educational, or developmental aspects were dealt with. The Department
also has research projects sanctioned by United Board of Christian
Higher Education. |

| Dr. Sheela Julius Head of the Department
received a grant of Rs. 1,73,000.00 to carry out a research
on Gifted children in a developing society . The variables considered
were Personality, Intelligence and Creativity. |

| University Grant Commission Career oriented
courses: |
The course introduces students to career
and market oriented skill enhancing courses that have utility
for job, self-employment and empowerment. At the end of three
years the students will be equipped with a Certificate/Diploma/Advanced
Diploma along with a Bachelors degree.
The course in Human Relations is offered after regular classes
during the week. The course is open to students of all disciplines
of all the years. The maximum student strength in each course
will be 30. |

| VIKAAS Student Counseling Centre: |
| VIKAAS started in 1985. Psychological counselling
is offered to students related to issues on concentration, time
management, study habits, insecurity, self esteem, exam fear,
communication skills, interpersonal relationships, etc. Group
counselling programs are held on a regular basis for students
in Personality development. Psychological assessments of personality,
intelligence, vocational interest and aptitude are available
at Vikaas. |

CHILD
DEVELOPMENT CENTRE |
|
| Child development Centre had its inception
on 23rd February 2001 with the aim of serving children. The
objective of the centre is to provide psychological services
for school children up to 16 years of age. This includes assessment
and counseling services. Assessments for aptitude, intelligence,
memory, learning, personality and creativity are carried out.
The centre offers special education for children with mental
retardation between the ages of 6 and 18. |

| The day to day activities of the centre includes
academics, functional skills training, yoga therapy, speech
therapy, physiotherapy, recreational activities and vocational
training in candle making, key chains, greetings cards, phenyl
and gardening. |

| The staff of the centre includes a full time
Psychologist, Special Educator and a Helper. A part time Physiotherapists
extends her service thrice a week and a part time Speech therapist
is available once a week. Individualized counseling is offered
to parents of the children. Faculty and students of the Department
of Psychology are involved with the activities of the centre
