The Department of Mathematics was established in the year 1935. It offers courses which leads to the B.Sc degree in Mathematics, Supporting Courses for students majoring in Physics, Chemistry and Computer Science and also Optional Courses for all majors.
 
The objectives of the Department are:-
  • to prepare students to have a sound foundation in Mathematics
  • to enable the students to appreciate the  intrinsic aspects of Mathematics
  • to introduce realistic applications of Mathematics in related Sciences
  • to cultivate the skills which will enable the students to continue in self-education.

The department currently has 132 students in the degree programme.
 
Programmes Offered:

The department offers a B.Sc degree program.

A certificate course in Quantitative Aptitude (25 hrs  duration) is offered to students of all majors.

Eligibility :
A pass in Higher Secondary or its equivalent with the subjects Mathematics as one of the subjects.
 
Highlights of the Programme:
  • The students of the Department have an option to choose from among the Supporting Courses -  Physics or Statistics in the I year and  Chemistry or Computer Science in the II year.
  • Elective Courses offered by the Department are open to students of Physics, Chemistry and Computer Science majors. They are Discrete Mathematics, Graph Theory, Mathematical Statistics, Number Theory and Cryptography.
  • The Optional Courses offered to all the Departments are Statistics, Linear Programming and Popular Astronomy.
  • Supporting Mathematics papers offered by the Department are based on the requirements of the respective major Departments.
 
Facilities:
  • The Department has telescopes which are used by the students taking a paper in Astronomy for viewing the night sky.
  • The Department also has a varied collection of Text books and Reference books which are lent to the students for their reference.
  • The Department has a LCD projector which is used for class room teaching and Mathematics Association activities.
 
Activities:
  • Class trips which include Factory visits and visits to the Planetarium, Observatory are organized.
  • A Night class for star gazing is also organized.
  • A certificate course in Quantitative Aptitude (25 hours duration) is offered to students of all majors. This enables students to perform well at competitive examinations.
 
Associations:
The Mathematics Association organizes Special Lectures, Quiz and other Competitions.
An intercollegiate competition MECOSTOR is also organized annually.
 
Prizes :
  1. The Alice Barnabas Junior Mathematics Prize is given to the student who gets the highest total in core subjects in the I and II semesters.
  2. The Arulmani Manual Senior Mathematics Prize is given to the student who scores highest in all the Mathematics papers in semesters I – VI.
  3. The Edith Coon Science Prize is given to the student from Mathematics, Physics Chemistry and Computer Science major who gets the highest marks in 4 semesters core and supporting.
  4. The S.Kavitha Mathematics Prize is given to the student who gets highest marks in second year core papers.
  5. The Grace Poonnen Mathematics Prize is given to the best student of the graduating class of the Department of Mathematics in recognition of her scholarship, leadership and contribution to the Department and to the College.
  6. The Beatrice Chinniah Mathematics Prize is given to the best student of the B.Sc  Matematics class securing highest marks in Core and Supporting papers in semester I - IV
 
Scholarship:
The following merit cum means scholarships are awarded to Mathematics students.
  • The Annamani Scholarship is for a second year student.
  • The Udayarathinam Scholarship is for a third year student.
