The objectives of the CNCREA are

  • To create awareness on primary prevention of Non Communicable diseases such as diabetes mellitus,cancer and cardiovascular diseases through counseling,seminars,lectures etc
  • To extend consultation services to educational institutes,companies,corporate groups and hospitals
  • To carry out research projects
  • To serve as a documentation centre for all research activities carried out in the department and to facilitate publication of research articles in Regional,National and International Journals
  • To organize conferences, seminars and symposia with relation to NCD’s periodically.

The centre has collaborations with the Indian Network for NCD’s prevention (INN)


Current Research Projects:

  1. The World Bank Assisted project on Food and drug safety entitled “National Street Food Survey” sponsored by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare,Government of India.The centre is one of the 16 nodal centers from across the country and the co-ordinator for the region.This project is now in the second phase of execution-Action programme.
  2. “Effect of almond supplementation on adult subjects with Insulin Resistance Syndrome” a collaborative research project with the Almond Board of California.

The Centre offers Nutrition education modules and Nutrition counseling to corporate groups,health care workers,food service providers,school children,women’s groups etc.

The Centre is also interested in undertaking collaborative research projects for disease prevention and health promotion


The centre also has sponsored jointly and collaborated research with other agencies like Madras Dental College and Tamilnadu water supply and Drainage Board(TWA), Institute of Child Health, Chennai Corporation, Consumer Action Group (CAG).

  • The coordinator and co-coordinator attended a training programme on “Training of Trainers of Street Food Project” in August 2006
  • As part of the National Nutrition Week celebrations (*September 1st to 7th,2006), the Centre

    (a) organized Diabetic screening camp for teaching and non-teaching staffs of WCC,

    (b) distributed pamphlets on the theme”Eat Right for Better Health” to the staffs, and

    (c) conducted Nutrition Education Programme for the Tsunami affected Children

    (September 29th,2006).

Extension Activities

  • The centre has organized diabetic screening camp and health education programmes in rural areas and for staff on campus
  • The centre also regularly organizes talks on ”Eat Right for Better health” for corporate groups, senior citizens and women’s groups
  • Individual and group diet counseling on eating right is also given.
